The Declaration of Independence was signed by representatives from the 13 American colonies at Independence Hall in Philadelphia on July 4, 1776. Drafted primarily by Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin, it announced that the colonies were no longer under British rule but that they had established their own independent nation: the United States of America. The historic scene showing the signing of the Declaration of Independence was captured by artist. John Trumbull in a famous painting that was placed in the U.
