A good strike of a gold schilling of GDANSK 1766, very circulated and worm because the use. Is small, only 16 mm diameter and have a weight of 0.79 grams of gold. Stanislaus Augustus Poniatowski POLAND/ POLAND/ POLEN / POLOGNE / POLAND Stanislaw August Poniatowski. Szelag (Schilling) in gold 1766, Gdansk / Danzig RARITY. On the sides, the date 17-66 AD: Small coat of arms of the city of Gdansk (two crosses topped with a crown).

On the sides there are the initials FL - S (Fryderyk Ludwik Stuber). From the top, under the rosette, a three-line inscription: SOLID / CIVITAT/ GEDANThe Gdansk Mennica worked only until 1766. Then, due to monetary reforms carried out by King Stanislaw August Poniatowski, its operation was suspended.

The suspension of the issue was caused by the counterfeiting activities of Prussia, which flooded Polish territories with undervalued coins. Minting coins in accordance with Polish regulations would result in their immediate outflow abroad. Hence, the city council stopped minting coins in 1766. Until the end of the reign of Stanislaw August, the city maintained the mint staff and employed a guard.

Known gold mintages of shillings and triplets are dated 1766, but it is not known whether they were minted in 1766 or later. Minting coins for collectors was popular in Gdansk during the reign of Augustus III and, as you can see, it was also done during the reign of Stanislaw August Poniatowski.

A gold coin from 1766 was in the lost Malbork collection. Currently, it is in Krakow in the collection of E. Karolkiewicz also had it in his collection. A gold shilling was extremely rare to appear at auctions. We recommend it to the best collections!
