The coin: 1857 Type 3 Gold Dollar, Indian Princess Head (Large Head), struck at the Philadelphia Mint. 1.672 grams, 90% gold / 10% copper, 13mm diameter - the smallest gold coin ever issued by the United States Mint. Obverse shows Liberty wearing a feathered headdress with LIBERTY on the band, encircled by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. Reverse shows the denomination and date within an agricultural wreath tied with a bow.

The mount: A soldered loop is affixed to the top edge of the coin and connects to the chain. Solder is visible at the attachment point. This is period jewelry work, consistent with the Victorian-era practice of wearing small gold coins as pendants and watch-chain charms. The chain: Antique fancy-link chain with an attractive patina.
